Would you mind explaining to me why you don't think the mags are true representations of the style, and what you mean when you say this isn't a magazine fashion, but a street fashion? I'm just a little confused ^^; and would like to hear your reasoning behind your opinion! :3

Hmm, I'm a beginner Gyaru, started actively dressing since the summer of this year, but I've been interested in Gyaru for a really long time, I just didn't know what it was! Hahah.

Let's see, I try to style my fashions and make up after the models in mags like Popteen, Ranzuki, and EGG. I love dressing hime gyaru as well!

This me on the left, next to my amazing friend Michi.
Hmm, I love to talk to and make new gal friends, so I'd love to make friends with you guys!
If any of you happen to be on livejournal, I'm there too So feel free to friend me!

Okay, bye!

Sorry for creeping, but I dropped by your site; you like Emilie Autumn?! So cool! I haven't found a gal yet who likes her. ;p

Oh yeah, I totally love Emilie Autumn! My music tastes are all over the place. XD I like just about anything besides American rap and country. :3

It's like calling emo or goth or chav a magazine fashion, they're a product of what people on the street have made, saying that a magazine is what leads and what made them is a bit......... odd. Yeah sure magazines are great to read, I read them and have favourite models but I don't use them as reference points for research.

Hellooo and welcome to the forum. Id have to agree with YanYan about gyaru being more or less a street style. Atleast thats what it started out as...and as more and more manbas are popping up, the style seems to be returning to its roots. Though I think that most gals are following magazine fashions now, which is a shame.

<3333333333 Michi...she is SUPER nice. I think one of the top western gals. Im sure with her as a friend you will grow into a lovely gal.

Oh yes for sure, Gyaru is it's own independent with or without mags it will still be there as long as their are GALS to wear the styles. However I do like to read them, because like Guliam said I'm one of the Gyarus who (sadly) doesn't have direct access to many Japanese Gyaru resources, outside of mags and the like. And I do like how mags highlight the latest trends and give advice on what to and what not to do. I did say I am a beginner so I do like to browse through things and see what will and what won't work for my particular body shape and what not.

But thank you for explaining your points to me! ^^

What do you mean by research, exactly? Unless you're talking about being in Japan and observing this stuff in person, I'm assuming you mean looking at street snaps or blogs on the Internet. Honestly, I don't see how that's all that much different or better than flipping through a magazine. I'm not saying it's bad to want to know what real gyaru in Japan or elsewhere are actually wearing, but you can't pay attention to that stuff and also say that magazines don't have anything to do with it. They do. This leads me to my next point...

Even people in the streets are at least partially influenced by magazines. If you don't believe just how much pull magazines have, take a look at someone like Tsubasa. She went from an ordinary girl to an absolute super-star because of her work as a dokusha model in egg and Popteen. Many magazines like egg and nuts also include street snaps in most issues, so editors are very aware of how people are dressing beyond the looks they feature each month. In other words, they don't try to hide it. I agree that people should seek out lots of different resources, but magazines should definitely be high up in that list of resources. In my opinion, actual gyaru street fashion is a culmination of lots of different aspects—personal taste, magazine fashion, charisma models, influential shop staff, the actual clothes put out by stores, etc. It has to start somewhere and I think magazines are a very good place to start. How seriously you want to take them is up to you.

In the end, what matters is the end result, or how you actually look. If someone is lazy and doesn't bother to put effort into dressing well and styling their hair and make—forget the effort to read magazines or look at street snaps—they're going to look bad.
