PostSubject: Kanji help?   Fri Aug 07, 2009 5:38 pm

Hey gals!
Well, I was wondering what my gyaru name (Tama) would be in kanji, so I was wondering if anyone on here could translate it into kanji. I looked up all the meanings of 'tama' and... there are a lot Neutral But I stole my name from a turtle in Love Hina, so I'm going to assume the meaning is 'shell'. But there are a few other meanings. Another one is 'ball' also, I wanted to know if 'jewel' was another meaning of it? Because I was looking on a name website, and when I looked up Tama, 'a jewel' was what they said was the meaning... Can anybody help?!

- Tama.

That's the kanji for shell - 貝殻

Other ways that you could write shell:

シェル - Shell

貝 - (could also mean shellfish)

甲殻 - (could also mean carapace, crust)

甲羅 - (could also mean carapace)

甲 - (could also mean first in rank, instep, grade a)

介 - (could also mean between, being in between, shellfish, mediation, concerning)

皮 - (could also mean skin, hide, leather, fur, pelt, bark)

弾丸 - (could also mean bullet, shot)

砲弾 - Shell

弾 - (could also mean bullet, shot)

殻 - (could also mean husk, hull, chaff)

玉 - (could also mean pod, hull)

- (could also mean jade, ball, bowl, sphere, bulb, lens, gem, jewel, bullet, shot, pretty girl, bead, coin)

WOW Neutral
Thank you YanYan! That is extremely helpful Smile

I think I'll go with the last one. Because is can also mean pretty girl/jewel :3. I just wish my computer wasn't dumb and made the kanji show up as something other than a rectangular box...

Thanks again!!

You need to install the Japanese language pack, assuming that you have Miscrosoft XP

Here's some useful info for you all. Windows 7 is coming out in October, so if any of you are thinking about getting a laptop or computer get it in October.

You could also add the japanese language to your language settings on your computer. This also allows you to type in Japanese. I think the download does too, but I used to have the settings changed. The only thing I dont like, is that it changes your internet search too sometimes to Japanese. I only noticed it with Google and email though. It wasnt too bad because I can read a bit, but i dont know every kanji out there. >.< Ive never downloaded the program, but it may be better than the settings.

Hrmf, I don't know which kanji to pick >:{

I kinda like シェル, but I also like 莢.

Does it matter which one I choose? Other than the meanings? They are both 'tama'??

... or am I just completely off here?

You're correct, they both have the same sound. It's like in English you have Wales and Whales which are spelt different but sound the same. Okay, it's not the best example but anyway, both of them say Tama.

I thought that was obvious, if you want any katakana or hiragana translations just ask as I find them easier than kanji by far.
