PostSubject: Style Question   Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:52 pm

Do you gals consider the newer Gal Lolita style a real style of Gyaru? I've heard about it a few times and have seen pictures of the style, but it seems to have disappeared. I really like the combination though, as lolita and gyaru are the 2 styles I can never seem to choose between. What I want to know is would I be completely rejected if I wore the style?

Sorry for any spelling mistakes or anything...I sprained my ankle yesterday and am kind of drugged up on pain killers... sweatdrop

the only time i really thought that a lolli gal mix was ok
was when i was at a festival and the gals would ware a
wa-lolli outfit. you know, a lolli kimono deal, cause then
they are being traditional but original at the same time,
and still being fashionable gyarus~ honestly, otherwise
its more like hime. a dress and a gal. no~? but other than
thos too things, i personally don't like it. but you do your
thing~ my what a shame, i do hope your ankle feels better.

It is certainly a real style but, there are many western lolitas who dislike gyaru anyway, especially gyaru lolita. Western gyarus to be honest aren't really too fussed because it's just gyaru hair, make-up and nails in a lolita outfit. I know of a few gyaru lolitas, if you like it go for it. The lolita dresses used however are more bland than the usual sweet lolitas and never dark like the gothic, aristocratic or classic lolitas.

Gal lolita has definitely been done before—as evidenced by the images from Vanilla Girl—but it's not a mainstream style, either. Vanilla Girl is now out of print and the special they did on gal lolita was only limited to a single issue. Can you really call something that showed up once in magazine a real style? I also can't think of any models who dress gal lolita or any shops that cater to the look.

To the OP: if you're interested in gyaru fashion and like cute, frilly things, I would suggest looking into styles like koakuma-kei, a style popular with both cabraret club hostesses and regular girls. More information about it can be found here:

http://www.style-arena.jp/en/tribe/0014.html

Good brands for this style include Liz Lisa, MA*RS, and GOLDS infinity:

A good magazine to look at would be, of course, Ageha. You can view recent issues online here:

Then again, if you prefer something less sexy and a little more covered up, hime-gyaru might be a better match for you. More information about it can be found here:

Check out brands like Jesus Diamante and La Parfait for inspiration:

La Parfait also has a lot of great casual items, even t-shirts, that work with hime style as well.

Either that or there's always hime gyaru which you might like, do some research on different styles in gyaru and find one that suits you.

Since I'm a lolita, I can tell you that there isn't really a style called gyaru-lolita. It's simply sweet lolita borrowing elements from hime gyaru style. It's not different enough from sweet to warrant it's own category and not gyaru enough to belong to that group either. There are girls who belong to both styles (i.e me lol) who use their 'split' wardrobes to create a hybrid, but as far and the rest of the fashion is concerned, it's a small variant, no different to the shortlived bittersweet lolita (black with sweet prints, now judged to be pure sweet instead of a variant) Articles on it are little more than attempts to re liven current trends and re-sell the image to the public.
I doubt you'll be rejected from anywhere for wearing it, but if you're called out on it, you'll have to explain why you've created a distinctive mix. as long as it's valid and fits the guidelines of wherever you wear it (lolita or gyaru communities) to a satisfactory degree, you should be perfectly alright to wear it!
