PostSubject: Bento Making anyone?   Sun Dec 06, 2009 8:50 am

I was curious to see if anyone still makes bento, or Kawaii Bento around here? I still do- I'll post some pictures when I get good ones. If so, what are your favorite recipe(s) to use? and what other tips could you give to new/novice bento builders.
I love making tonkatsu, or Katsudon, and then I just pack my little bento with a lot of rice- I have a small 2-tier one myself, I want to get a bigger one later on sometime next year.

For those of you who are not familiar with bento or kawaii bento (I'm sure you all are, but meh, disclaimers are always good) here are a few examples to drool over:

I decided to post a picture of a good starter bento, just in case. I really like the two-tier bento's my self, they work a lot better for me anyway- but experiment! Some of the Bentos I found (like that hello kitty one) are kind of ridiculous- I mean, how do they get it closed? X3

You are certainly braver than me X3 I have a deathly fear of making sushi it's irrational, but it's there.

I get a job well done out of making bentos. I really have fun, even if they are somewhat time consuming

It's just a lunch box... and besides, no one at my school, let alone near where I live as far as I know (Boulder CO) does either, but it's still fun to make- not even in my Japanese class, and we're being educated in Japanese culture along side with the language.

I like to make bento for myself and my family sometimes. But it's not for school.

However, since my son just started kindergarten I might start up again. It seems like he doesn't want to eat what's there.

I'm the worst chef ever,
cutting things to make them cute seems like it would only be even more frustrating.

x)
But I'd love to see yours! *___*

Wait! There's two types of bentos.

There's one that just for balanced nutrition (and good eats) and then there's the ones that mom's (with a lot of time on their hands) make to impress. When ever you see a really pretty bento just remember that yours don't have to be that way.

Here's a few links that I check out for bento making:
http://justbento.com/
http://justbento.com/recipes

it's pretty much the same site. But it has all the information you'll ever need for bento making.
